Italians in Serie A: Federico Dimarco is the standout player on matchday 14
The Inter defender is the best Italian player in the last round of Serie A according to Opta IndexMonday, November 29, 2021
Defender or additional striker? That was the question everyone was asking about Federico Dimarco at the end of matchday 14 of Serie A, MVP according to Opta data from this round of the championship.
Saturday's away match against Venezia, won 2-0 by the Nerazzurri, confirmed that the 24-year-old can perform with ease in his role which in reality goes far beyond simply being the third centre back. He's always involved in the attack, never giving up the chance to get forward, creating for his teammates and is tireless on the flank.
The only blemish on his performance throughout the 90 minutes at the Penzo was his miss one on one with Romero at the end of the game. That said, given all he did against the lagunari, this is certainly not enough to overshadow his performance. His talent is clear to see and he doesn't lack footwork. He seems to have found a balance with Calhanoglu on set-pieces ("me from the right, him from the left", he recently said) and on set-pieces, his attempts are almost always dangerous.
The game against Venezia proved once again that Dimarco can adapt to a variety of roles in Simone Inzaghi's game plan thanks to his versatility and selflessness. The full-back is a formidable offensive force and two stats from the match against Venezia prove it: six chances created (at least twice as many as any other player on the pitch in the match) and two shots on target (behind only Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez with three each). In short, the Inter coach can smile, because he has talent on his hands, with Nerazzurri blood. An invaluable combination.
