Italians in Serie A: Domenico Berardi stands out on matchday 9

He scored, he created, he delighted. Domenico Berardi takes the crown as the MVP of Serie A matchday 9 after a dazzling display against Venezia. The Neroverdi found themselves a goal behind at the Mapei Stadium after Okereke handed the guests the lead but Berardi brought the hosts level just five minutes later, cutting in from the left flank and thumping it into the bottom corner. The goal (his fourth in Serie A this season and third at home) was not only a fabulous finish but also outlined the leadership role that Berardi has taken on for Sassuolo. His teammates look to him and Domenico responds with splendid touches and link-up play. Over the course of his 82 minutes, he was everywhere. He has five shots (more than any other player), three of which were on target (also the game’s highest total) and won 80% of his duels. The Opta stats confirm it; he was the best player of the round.

He has scored four goals in his last five Serie A appearances and is in red-hot form in the league. Furthermore, with his striker against Venezia, he extended his tally against newly-promoted sides; he has had a hand in nine goals in his last eight games against sides, who have just come up from Serie B (seven goals and two assists).
